The world is an alternate of modern Earth. Magic is a real thing. It's harnessed and used by professionals to help move productions. Magic in this world is rarely used by the public. Humans have trouble using it at all and halfmites as much as they don't want to admit it, have little control over it either. It's its own flowing thing that usually can only be used to do helpfully things when it feed into man made machines.
The plants and animals of the world are cherished and taken care of because their close link to halfmites. This means that there are very few endangered or extinct creatures here. Pollution is slowly becoming a problem but has yet to reach the point that it threatens anything in the near future. There are measures being put in place to help prevent damage from pollution.
The world is similar to our own modern day Earth. Technology is very advanced and can be seen as more advanced than our own. A lot of medical issues have been eradicated and the average life span nearly a hundred years old. One can get around from place to place quickly. To get on the other side of the planet only takes a few hours. They have planes, cars, buses, bikes. If it's transportation in our would they have it. Although the designs are slightly different and a lot rely on the help of magic to work.
The two main ruling species on this Earth are humans and halfmites. The humans are what you'd think they are , just like normal humans. Halfmites are basically a cross of demons and animals. Breeding with humans have weakened their powers. Now they are only slightly stronger than humans. They have claws , fangs, wings when they turn a certain age, can read minds in a limited way and have animal like senses and reflexes. Other than these they are normal humans. Mix families of the two species aren't that common but aren't rare either. They are frowned upon by some but most see them as a strong connection between the two species and the link they need to help give rights to all.
The way the two species treat each other vary from country to country. But there is currently an overall sense of equality for all. It took many bloody battles throughout history to reach this point. (Think how real world humans treat the different races and such. It's a lot like that)
In Jaymie's country halfmites and humans have all the same rights as each other no matter the species , race, views or personal choices. Some are more frowned upon than others and are held back and are looked down on even when they technically have the same rights as everyone else. The rare Halfmites that bare the features of sea animals make less than other halfmites and humans. halfmites in general make more than humans because of thief powers in the past has left them in higher views and positions than most humans.
Other countries in the world represses humans to the point where they have no lives to live. Some do the same to halfmites. Such countries are slowly reworking their laws so that everyone has rights due to strong movements.
To Jaymie what is important and relevant to her is her family's status in their countries society. They are a mix of humans a halfmites that make enough money where they are considered to be a middle class family. They've had some struggles recently but they in all live comfortable lives and have a lot of freedoms and rights. Jaymie see the harsh reality of other countries and values her freedom. She understands that she is held high due to her being a halfmite but wishes she would actually be seen as the humans equal. Everyone says the world, or the country at least is all about equality yet they raise halfmites above the other due to fear and power. Jaymie doesn't have such power she might look tough but isn't. She's happy her family doesn't have to struggle like some but she also knows that it's only because of her halfmite father.
The world might seem peaceful but a lot of it is war torn and bloody. A world that Jaymie has barely seen in her country and the adults have talked about in hushed tones around her. There are wars for all kinds of reasons. If you think it would start a war , it has. They sheltering from this life due to the country she lives in and her being so young inspired her and a lot of other young people to want to travel the world.
